Ethel Johns Award 2010

Gail Donner, RN, PhD is Professor and Dean Emeritus, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing and a PhD in adult education. Gail has had a long and prolific career as a nurse educator – as an instructor in the early 70’s at the Wellesley hospital school of nursing, and an Instructor and Coordinator of the Certificate Program in Psychiatric Nursing at Ryerson Polytechic University.

Her vision and leadership were quickly recognized and in 1976, she became Professor and Chair of Ryerson’s Department of Nursing. In 1989, she took on the position of Director of Nursing Education and Research at the Hospital for Sick Children and was recruited to the Bloomberg faculty as a part-time Associate Professor. In 1992 she moved to the Bloomberg faculty full-time, and became the Associate Dean of Education here in 1997 and served as Dean from 1999 until her retirement in 2001.

An educator in the best sense of the word – teacher, advocate, mentor and colleague, Dr. Donner’s commitment to nursing education is widely evident in all of her professional activities. Numerous awards speak to her influence and lifelong commitment to the advancement of the profession including selection as one of CNA’s Top 100 Nurses, RNAO’s Honourary Life Membership and Award of Merit, the Order of Ontario, and most recently, the prestigious Jeanne Mance Award from CNA. A honourary doctorate and distinguished lectureships have further recognized her excellence and achievements in nursing education.
