| The goal of the IEN Bridging Programs project is to enhance timely workforce integration of internationally educated nurses. Despite advances in the assessment of foreign qualifications in Canada, bridging programs themselves vary greatly in terms of content, quality, length and hours. The Pan-Canadian Framework of Guiding Principles and Essential Components for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) Bridging Programs is intended to provide a consistent set of principles and components to help guide the development and delivery of nursing bridging programs in Canada. The principles and essential components included in the Framework are meant to assist bridging programs as they review and refine their programs. These are not standards, nor are they linked to accreditation. They are a first step towards promoting more uniformity among bridging program providers across Canada. The development of the Pan-Canadian Framework was led by the CASN/ACESI in consultation with relevant stakeholders, and with funding from Health Canada. It is one of a series of programs and policies that the federal and provincial governments and nursing stakeholders have adopted to bring IENs into the national workforce more quickly and effectively.
