Dr. Jannetta MacPhail, R.N., BS, MSN, PhD., LLB (Hon), F.A.A.N
 

It is with sadness that we announce the passing in her 88th year, on September 15, 2010 of Dr. Jannetta MacPhail, R.N., BS, MSN, PhD., LLB (Hon), F.A.A.N, Professor and Dean Emeritus of the University of Alberta School of Nursing and of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio.

Daughter of the late Donald M. and Emma (McNicoll) McPhail of Renfrew Ontario.  Predeceased by sisters Margaret, Allene (Roy) Loken, and Anna, and by brother Donald (Margaret) and infant brother James. Dearly loved aunt of Ellen (Barry) Aldrich, Donald (Kim) Loken, Douglas (Lynne) Loken, and Hugh (Dena) McPhail. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, and particularly by niece Erin and nephew Douglas (Lisa) Aldrich.@

Jannetta's thirst for knowledge and her passion for nursing education shaped her memorable life. She graduated from Ontario Provincial Normal School in 1943 with her First Class Certificate. Jannetta attended the School of Nursing at London Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario, graduating in May of 1949 as a Registered Nurse, and received her Certificate in Clinical Instruction in Nursing from the University of Western Ontario in 1950. Jannetta received her BS in Maternity Nursing and Supervision from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, New York in 1952. She received her MSN in Pediatric Nursing and Administration in Nursing Education from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan in 1960. She received her Ph.D. in Administration in Higher Education from the University of Michigan in 1966. In May 1986 Jannetta received the honourary degree of Doctor of Laws from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario at its Health Sciences Convocation.

Jannetta served as Dean and Professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio from 1972 to 1982 and as Dean and Professor at the University of Alberta School of Nursing from 1982 to 1987. She was internationally recognized for her work in the development of Nursing Doctorate (N.D.) and Ph.D. programs at Case Western Reserve University, which served as models in nursing education in both the United States and Canada. She developed the Ph.D. program at the University of Alberta, the first such program in Canada. While earning her advanced degrees in nursing, Jannetta held academic positions at the University of Toronto and at Wayne State University, and nursing appointments at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Renfrew Victoria Hospital and the University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Jannetta was the author of more than 100 published articles on nursing and nursing education and was a published book author and contributor.  Jannetta was a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Honourary Life Member of the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses and of the Nursing Alumni Association of Columbia University. She was the recipient of many awards and distinctions, including awards for Outstanding Leadership from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and from the American Assembly of Men in Nursing. Amongst her many appointments, she served at 1st Vice-President of the Canadian Nurses Association and Chairperson of the Commission on Nursing Services of the American Nurses Association.

In 1987, Jannetta retired to Vero Beach, Florida, where she was extremely active in the volunteer community. She put her knowledge of health care to good use in being a leader in developing the Health Ministry Program at the Community Church of Vero Beach. She served as President of the American Association of University Women, Vero Beach, and was a founding member of the Vero Beach Symphonic Association.

The family would like to thank the staff at Forest Hill Long Term Facility in Kanata Ontario for the wonderful and loving care provided to Jannetta. Family will receive visitors on Saturday September 25, 2010 at 1 p.m. at McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home, 85 Munro Avenue E., Renfrew, to be followed by a Memorial Service and reception at 2 p.m. in the Chapel. Interment will follow at Thomsonville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation, 499 Raglan St. N., Renfrew, ON. K7V 1P6.
